Train Like a Nordic Skier, Part II
I want to write about why training like a Nordic skier is so beneficial for all of us. We are trying to develop the body for a sport that demands the whole body and a critical mix of strength and aerobic endurance.
1. Most of the Time is Spent at low-intensity. While we need all different levels of aerobic training, low-intensity training allows for higher volumes and is effective at creating the aerobic infrastructure. Things like building capillary density, mitochondrial effectiveness, and strengthening the heart.
2. Variety Rules All. Nordic skiing is a sport that you’re only able to do for part of the year. That means that the rest of the year you need to build the strength and endurance for it. For such a total body and demanding sport, this requires big volume. And lots of variety. Running, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, swimming, etc. All are great ways to train for cross-country skiing.
3. Get in the Gym. Strength is a critical component of being a good Nordic skier. It helps us develop more effective balance and develops our upper body to apply power with the poles. The dynamic movements of effective Nordic skiing require the equal ability to apply power quickly and effectively while sliding across snow. This means we need to have the strength to balance and then the secondary strength to apply power from that balanced position. It’s dynamic and challenging. Proper strength goes a long way.
4. Go Hard. Nordic skiing is a hard sport. It’s important to get total body aerobic workouts in. Running with poles is a great way to do this. Bounding would be even better for the initiated. But for many of us, running with poles accomplishes just what we need. We can push ourselves to the limit and strengthen our aerobic capacity.
I’m sure I’m not done with this topic. There is a reason that Nordic skiers are some of the fittest athletes on the planet. They are true all-around endurance athletes. The sport itself is low-impact and can be a truly lifelong pursuit. I’m always looking to get more people into the sport so please reach out if you have questions about how to get started!
